Fishery Report: Week Ending: 20^th September 2020

Monday and a good start to the week with fish moving on & off all day. Members Steve Jordan and Pam Shuttleworth shared a mornings boat catching 12 between them on Fabs fished in the top 3ft, Ian Brearley and Ian Leach shared a boat fishing the majority of the time in green bay boating 27 fish on a washing line set up. Bob Menhams fished claret hoppers for his short morning session catching 10 trout with anglers fishing the last 4 hours catching on small emergers and dries.

Tuesday, daddies, crunchers and buzzers were the patterns taking fish with the boats spread our across the main basin, green bay, car park and Markfield arm. Andre Russell fished from his float tube catching 11 trout, B Perry fished daddies and buzzers for his 15 trout with P Mee recording 7 trout on diawls and crunchers for his mornings visit

Wednesday and a slight change to the weather, noticeably cooler in the morning with the wind starting to move into the east. All Water member Paul Walker fished diawls, cdc and buzzers to record his catch of 16 trout, Bob Jones float tubed to and recorded 8 trout

Thursday & Friday gusty, cooler easterly wind with the best of the fishing to be had from 11am. All water member Jamie Scott fished DI3 & midge tip to record his catch with a tequila blob accounting for most, Jamie reported getting lots of follows from all over the reservoir., Andy Hubbard fished the shelter of the green bay to take his 6 fish with Ian Bradfield sharing a boat with P Mee recording 19 fish between them, mostly on blobs and fabs.

Saturday and another cool morning, wind from the east again. Again the fishing was best late morning onwards with daddies, claret nymph, big red, blob and fabs wit anglers using DI3, midge tip and floater.

Jan Webber fished a big red wet on a midge tip in green bay to record his 6 fish with Tony Bokenham fishing 12pm to 4.30pm warmest part of the day to take his 5 trout

Sunday and another cool morning, its getting that autumnal feel to it. Anglers reported seeing plenty of fish on the surface feeding, with trout prepared to chase and follow but proved difficult to hook, John Thomson & Pete Hunt faired the best boating 6 fish during their session on small diawls and buzzer

Water temperature is good at 16c+, last weeks rod average 3.9

A reminder of our Covid operating procedures at our fisheries, Draycote – Thornton – Eyebrook. All our counters have a Perspex screen fitted with hand sanitizing points as you enter the lodges.

Ensure you remove any litter from the boats especially any food wrappings, bottles, cans etc & place it in the dustbins provided.

Covid Operating Procedure While Visiting Draycote Eyebrook & Thornton Trout Fishery

1. Pre-Booking: All Bank & Boat anglers, will be required to call the lodge & pre book your visit
2. Pre-payment will be required at your time of booking, this will reduce queuing at the lodge.
3. Pre-payment can be made by a credit / debit card.
4. Confirmation of your Boat or Bank Booking along with your receipt will be posted at the lodge next to the Booking In – Booking Out sheet. Hand sanitiser points are provided at the lodge entrance doors for you use
5. Lodge & Tackle shop are open, use the hand sanitiser as you enter & from July 24^th it will be mandatory for you to wear a face covering within the shop, this can be a Buff, scarf, mask, face shield etc
6. Observe the 1m+ social distancing guidelines within the lodges / shop
7. Bank Anglers are to ensure they observe social distancing and while fishing keep a minimum of   15 meters apart. Bring your own hand sanitiser and use it as required during the day especially if you’ve used barrier key pads, combination locks, sat on benches or opened gatesBOATS:
8. Two anglers may share a boat, or three anglers from the same household
9. We recommend you follow the Angling Trust guidelines & wear a face covering while the boat is moving under power

Pontoon Access Guidelines Posted at the Pontoon Walkway-

1. All Anglers Wait at the pontoon walkway
2. Fishery Staff will call you forward onto the pontoon.
3. Boat Numbers will be allocated by the staff working the pontoon once your called forward.
4. Prevent Queuing & Delays Minimize your journey to & from the boat.
5. Do Not Tackle up in the boat next to the pontoon, staff will instruct you to leave the pontoon as soon as possible.
6. Two Anglers fishing together MUST BE READY when called to come onto the pontoon together.
7. The angler in charge of the engine will enter the boat first while his partner passes him/her the tackle.
8. Minimize Queues & Delays If you require to leave the pontoon to pick up other tackle items it should ONLY BE ONE OF YOU, the other angler in charge of the engine remains in the boat.

9. Fishery staff will be controlling the number of anglers on the pontoon at any one time.

BE PREPARED TO WAIT for their instructions for you to come forward & secure the boat to the pontoon.

10. On returning have your tackle ready to vacate the boat & pontoon as quickly as possible.
11. Boats & Life Jackets will be Disinfected after every session.
12. At all times comply with the instructions given by the fishery staff, this is to ensure we meet our current operating guidelines & social distancing rules.
13. Remove your litter from the boat & place it in the dustbins provided at the fisheries.

Fishery Report: Week Ending: 13^th September

Monday with the water temperature at a steady 17c we were starting to see more fish moving to the large hatches of smaller midge, with a few more of the larger claret buzzer showing every day and increasing numbers of daddies, Pastor Chip fished Monday evening good evening rise catching 6 on a small F Fly

Tuesday small claret cripple midge was the fly Mick Glover fished to catch 12 trout, good catches were reported by all of Tuesday rods reporting a combination of trout that had been in a while generally falling to smaller size 14, 16 flies and recent stock fish.

Wednesday good to see Phil Moore back out on the water and catching 5 trout, Barry Deeley alternated between small hoppers on a floater and small lures on an intermediate to record his 10 trout, B Perry fished buzzers and hoppers for his 14 trout with Pastor Chip returning with his son Brandon to catch 14

Still lots of tiny black or vivid green midge on the water although we are seeing some of the larger claret buzzer during the late afternoon and evening

Thursday a day for daddies, hoppers, shipman’s, cdc, claret snatchers and the mallard and claret with the afternoon and evening session starting to fish better than the early morning. Richard Price fished daddies for his 7 trout, Peter Wrigley fished emergers for his 7 trout with Keith Walker fishing the afternoon session with a shipman’s to catch his 10 trout. Howard Davies fished the last few hours with a claret snatcher and small muddler catching 12 trout

Friday and again the late afternoon and evening fished best with the larger claret buzzer increasing in numbers. Alan Smith fished a traditional Mallard and Claret wet fly to take his 6 trout, Keith Cowen continued to catch using hoppers on a floating line or fab on an intermediate, Carl Bond caught 16 for his visit using buzzers and blob with all water member Dave Slesser recording 13 trout for his visit. Clive Holt and Colin Chambers shared a boat for the afternoon / evening session catching 11 between them

Saturday water temperature remains at 17c, Keith Cowen recorded 10 for his visit continuing to use hoppers and fab, Jan Webber recorded 13 with Mark Hunt using a floating line or midge tip alternating between dries, cruncher and fab to record his 17 fish catch. Thornton member John Bebbington bought his wife with him, were pleased to report she has caught her first trout.

Sunday we welcomed the All Abilities Fly Fishing Group conditions looked good and we were confident they would have a good day, they enjoyed an outstanding visit with a rod average 8+ catching fish on dries, nymphs and buzzers, thanks to Mark Goodge, Shaun Higgins and Ian Bradfield for arranging the day. Richard Bromwich who`s new to fly fishing also enjoyed an excellent morning catching 4 trout

Fishery Report: Week Ending: 6^th September

A slight improvement to our sport this week, on some day’s anglers reported seeing an increasing number of fish on the surface.

The vast majority of the trout moving are feeding on tiny black or olive midge although we are starting to see a few of our larger claret buzzer starting to show with an increasing number of daddies.

Most of the fish caught were on size 16 or smaller buzzer & cdc patterns fished on the lightest tippet possible.

Its incredibly frustrating fishing but if you do scale down they are catchable, I managed to land two and lose another two during a 90min session one evening, single fly, 20ft+ leader to a 4lb point.

The algae continues to be an issue although any breeze does help to clear it.

Our water temperature is 17c which will allow us to stock again this week, some fresh fish will hopefully be a tad easier to tempt with the increasing hatches of the larger buzzer and daddies starting to become the residents fish chosen food item.

Fishery Report: Week Ending: 30^th August 2020

Tough week at Thornton despite the storm on Tuesday helping to drop our water which is currently 17c.

Water clarity is generally ok, although we have some algae this morning.

Little or no fly life which was the result of the high water temperatures, I would expect to see an improvement to our hatches with the cooler conditions, this morning I saw the first of our larger claret buzzer, some crane fly about with a surprising number of fry.

Fish that were taken during the week fell to small cdc, buzzer, booby & snakes with the Thornton arm and main basin been the best areas

With the water temperature at 17c we will be able to arrange a stocking towards the end of this week or early next week. Currently our records indicate 3900+ trout in the reservoir.

STW have reopened the toilets with limited access.

Fishery Report: Week Ending: 24^th August 2020

Quiet week for us at Thornton with our surface water temperature for Monday through to Thursday stubbornly staying at 21c at 7.30am

Not surprising therefore few rods with sinking lines, booby and damsel nymphs working best.

No boats out on Friday due to the storm. Saturday morning the wind although strong was below our boating limit and with the water temperature having dropped to 19c we were expecting to see an upturn in the fishing. Mark Hunt took advantage of the cooler conditions and fished his small yellow owls and cdc patterns to record his 15 fish catch.

Sunday anglers reported seeing fish moving but were proving difficult to tempt with size 14 and 16 cdc and buzzers working best

With the start of a new week and yet another storm I can report our water temperature continues to drop following these storms and is currently 18.5c at that we should start to see an improvement in our sport.

Fishery Report: Week Ending: 16^th August 2020

Thornton being 70 acres and fed by two small streams, currently with little flow, the heatwave didn’t do us any favours last week, the surface temperature climbed as the heatwave took hold.

Monday the surface temperature at 7.30am was 21c by Thursday we recorded a surface temperature at 7.30am of 24c. We advised anglers not to fish and pointed them towards the larger Eyebrook & Draycote fisheries.

Cooler forecast on Saturday & Sunday is starting to help with the water temperature at 7.30am Sunday at 21c

Most of the rain has missed us, but unless we get a huge amount its unlikely to lower the water temperature. What’s on our side is the decreasing daylight hours, with longer night time hours, hopefully cooler night time temperature that will suck the heat out of the water and reduce the water temperature.

Fishery Report: Week Ending: 9^th August

Monday & Tuesday were both difficult days, we started at 7.30am with a water temperature of 20c which increased during the day. The algae bloom hasn’t helped. Unsurprisingly sinking lines with boobies, fabs and snakes produced best.

Wednesday & Thursday followed the same pattern, water temperature 20c at 7.30am climbing to 21c+ by 3pm, not surprising therefore that the rods who did venture out fished during the morning session and concentrated their efforts o the deeper water.

Friday, Saturday & Sunday, the forecast 30 degree daytime temperatures arrived, on our advice most anglers cancelled or moved their bookings to the larger waters Eyebrook or Draycote. We recorded our highest water temperature of the year, starting at 7.30am 21c climbing to 24c by 3pm.

All in all a difficult weeks fishing, high air and water temperature with an algae bloom, not great conditions for fly fishing.

On the plus side the shortening daylight hours and increasing cooler darker hours will allow the water temperature to drop quickly once were out of this current warm spell. Weather forecast does indicate cooler temperature mid week onwards.

Fishery Report: Week Ending: 2^nd August

Following a cooler wetter Sunday night, the water temperature on Monday at 7.30am was 19c+

Monday was similar, wet & windy with few rods out. Fishing was difficult all day with the wind, an increase in the algae didn’t help. Hopefully, the cooler forecast for the next few days will help.

Tuesday with the water temperature down to 19c with a brisk breeze angler took our advice and fished with fast sinking lines & boobies on a short leader. The morning session continues to fish best with most of the fish being caught by lunchtime. With a rod average of 3 for the morning boosted by Barry Deeley 6 fish catch on a DI7 with an olive & orange booby.

Wednesday with the forecast warmer weather our surface temperature at 7.30an was 19.5c climbing during the day to 21.5c not surprising therefore that the morning session with sinking lines generally produced best, except for Jan Webber who fished the afternoon and evening who caught a brace on a daddy.

Thursday with hotter conditions we were expecting a difficult day, however some rods proved us wrong. Bob Jones in his float tube caught 8 on a cats booby, fab on a DI7, Carl Bond fished buzzers deep to catch his 9 trout with David Pritchard also fishing buzzers for his 3 trout with the Green Bay area producing best

Friday, Saturday & Sunday the hot weather had arrived, we started the day at 7.30am with a water temperature 20c which increased to 23c by 3.00pm unsurprising therefore we had few rods on the water. With the higher water temperatures our algae bloom returned.

Anglers generally followed our advice and fished the cooler mornings with varied success with our weekly rod average 1.5 The high daytime air temperature drove the water temperature up during the day peaking at 23c which in turn caused us to have an algae bloom. Cooler weather forecast Monday through to Wednesday which will certainly help

Government has announced that mandatory Face Coverings will be required to be worn within all shop in England from Friday 24^th July, these can be a Buff type, scarf, mask etc Our lodges are classed as shops.

Fishery Report: Week Ending: 26^th July 2020

Monday and the start of a new week, daylight hours are noticeably reducing from were they were a fortnight ago. Water temperature at 7.30am was 19.5c but with a cooler forecast we should see that drop. Unsurprisingly sinking lines with booby was the most successful method with Keith Cowen fishing a damsel booby to catch his 6 trout for his mornings visit, Howard Davies caught 4 for his mornings fishing with D Button catching 3 again the olive booby worked best. Little or no evening rise.

Tuesday another day for fast sinking lines and the damsel booby, with the water temperature a 7.30am 19c it was always going to fish in the morning, Barry Deeley fished a DI7 and olive booby to catch his 4 trout with Keith Cowen also taking 4 fishing the same method as did A Johnston with the deeper water in front of the main dam been the area to fish.

Wednesday and Thursday followed the same pattern, water temperature at 7.30am was 19c increasing during the day to be 20c+ by 3.00pm. Mornings therefore was the session to fish with little sport during the late afternoon and evening. Sinking lines with an olive booby continued to be the most successful method. Martin Vernon for his morning’s session caught 4 trout to 3lb5oz, Keith Cowen caught 6 trout for his mornings visit to 3lb+ with A Stone catching 4 for his mornings visit.

By Friday & Saturday our water temperature at 7.30am was up to 20c it was always going to be challenging day`s with the water temperature increasing during the day. Mick Cross, Alison & Brian Sibley managed 3 for their mornings visit with the deeper water in front of the main dam and into the main basin been the area to fish. Little or no sport during the late afternoon evening as our surface water temperature climbed during the day to 21c+

Sunday morning, another humid start to the day with the surface water temperature 20c and some algae in the water. The morning session fished best with Steve Jordan & Adan Gunby getting out on the water as soon as the boats were ready, a wise decision as they caught 11 trout during the first few hours of fishing on a DI7 white & green & olive booby.

Currently the morning session 8.30am – 3.00pm is the most productive as our surface temperature at 7.30am has been 19c+ to 20c. Very little evening sport.

This coming week we have a cooler weather forecast for Monday through to Friday that should bring our surface temperature down. Call the lodge for latest updates 01530 230807
