Fishery Report: Week Ending: 9th February 2020

First full week of the season produced a weekly rod average of 4.8 with some individual days returning an average of 7+

When fishing catch and release please ensure you de barb the flies your using.

Monday boats again enjoyed the best of the sport using DI3 and DI7 sinking lines, the key to success was fishing sinking lines with orange lures, cats whisker, green pea, blobs and boobies. Lee Henfrey caught up the Thornton arm fishing 40yds off the bank. R Cotterill and S Wilson boated 18 fish for their visit.

Tuesday and better conditions saw an upturn in the sport with a rod average of 7+ with the fish been a bit more spread out along the Thornton arm, wood bank and into the Markfield arm. All Water member Ian Jobe bank fished off the corner of the wood with a floating line and weighted nymphs to catch his 9 trout. Steve Windram fished up the top of the Thornton arm with a DI3 and orange lures catching 22 trout. Rodger Dunster and Peter Wrigley boated 15 trout for their visit with Arthur Olding catching 10 fish for his visit

Wednesday the weather dropped a bit cooler with a ground frost greeting the anglers, again the DI3, DI7 lines produced best with the corner of the wood to the lonesome pine fishing well. Kevin Hart shared a boat Rodger Kerrison boating 19 between them. All Water member Clive Moore on his first visit to Thornton caught 17 trout with another All Water member Dave Slessor catching 10. Dave Leavesley banked fished catching 6 trout on a weighted black and green tadpole & appetizer.

Thursday a sharp ground frost greeted the anglers with the frost on the pontoon not clearing before 9am resulting in the boats not going out until the pontoon and boats were considered safe by the fishery staff. Not surprising the sinking lines caught best again with Bob Middleton catching 21 for his visit , All Water member Ed Douglas visited Thornton for the first time catching 14 trout with P Harding fishing a small white and green snake to catch his 14 trout using a DI3.

Friday and you could sense a change in the weather A Topping bank fished using a midge tip and hot head damsel to catch his 8 trout, R Middleton and D Lovegrove shared a boat catching 22 on yellow blob, orange and yellow humongous, black and gold humongous and coral booby. Saturday and the wind was starting to pick up Phil Mee caught 11, Lee Henfrey also caught 11 with Mark Hunt recording 16 with at least 3 overwintered fish. We have seen a few more overwintered fish caught this week with the majority in excellent condition and weighing 3lb+

Sunday due to the storm the fishery was closed, we seem to have missed the worst of the rain, the level is up a little with some colour running along the shallows, although no where near as bad as expected.

Fishery Report: Week Ending: 2nd February 2020

Windy conditions greeted the opening day anglers, with bank and boat anglers fishing the shelter they could find within the Thornton arm opposite the lodge. The second day of the season provided better conditions allowing anglers to fish the popular areas.

After 18 month of low water levels anglers were greeted with a full Thornton reservoir with the surface & it’s a sign of a mild winter with our water temperature at 7+degrees which is 2degrees higher than we would expect for the time of year. Water clarity is good

6.9 rod average for the opening two days with the Thornton arm down to the willows producing best from the boats although All Water member Neil Shilton caught 13 from his float tube (see photo on Facebook www.facebook.com/FlyFishStore ) With the mild conditions anglers caught fish throughout the day.

Sinking lines, in particular the DI3 type of sinking lines produced best with an array of lures working, from orange fritz gold heads, cats whisker, black and green tadpole, blob.

Boat bookings for Wednesday, Friday & Saturday have limited availability, to avoid disappointment we recommend you call the lodge and pre book your boats. If you’re coming to fish from the bank we recommend you bring waders

Over the weekend notable catches were recorded by Keith Cowen, Jan Webber, Chris Sayer, Tom Morris, L Serrano, Mark Hunt, Simon Zabrzenski, J Batts, Steve Lewandowski, M Draper & Rodger Kerrison.

And yet more rain.

With the reservoir starting to get some level of clarity we had yet more rain towards the end of the week which once again raised the water level bringing with it reduced clarity.

Not a great deal to report, the clarity was starting to improve during the early part of the week with anglers starting to find a few trout mainly on lures & then we had the rain on Friday & Saturday!

The reservoir is once again overflowing down the spillway with visibility less than a foot on Sunday morning.

Today the level is starting to drop & return to its “Full” level although it may take a day or so to achieve that.

Clarity is the biggest issue its still less than a foot, I always think we need 14inch minimum.

Anyone who has a boat booked with us this week should contact the lodge & allow us to advise you. I would recommend you visit our sister water Draycote, their clarity is good as the water is pumped into there, the rod average on Sunday was 5.0 you can call Draycote 01788 812018

Thornton Weekly Report 13th October

Posted by & filed under Reports.

Thornton Weekly Report

Week ending 13th October 2019

Tel 01530 230807

Good sport continues at Thornton it’s a case of watching the weather and picking the good weather days, we use XC Weather app put in Thornton post code LE67 1AR we find its pretty good with the 24hr to 48hr period.

The reservoir level continues to creep towards the full mark, less than a foot to go to achieve that.

Anglers have found fish over the newly flooded banks along the Thornton Arm, wood bank & down the Markfield arm, at times the fish have been tight on the margins on other occasions 20ft off.

Floating lines and intermediates have worked best although on occasion a fast sinker has also worked, its transition time of year when we see fish still on the buzzer but also a few are turning onto the fry not surprising therefore it’s a real mix of flies which worked this past week, Snakes, boobies, cats whisker, green pea, damsel, buzzers, cdc and dries.

Monday Dennis Barnes caught 4 for his mornings visit, Tuesday Arthur Olding caught 4 for his mornings visit. Wednesday Richard Price caught 6 with Dave Leavesley catching 6 from the bank with P Walker going one better catching 7 from the bank. Thursday Kevin Last bank fished using a sinking line and booby to catch 3, Terry Miles fished a fritz damsel gold head pattern down the Markfield arm to catch 8 trout before the increasing south westerly winds made it too uncomfortable to fish.

Friday and a slower day with Chris Sayer being top rod for his mornings visit and 5 trout. Much better day on Saturday, calmer conditions, Jan Webber caught 6, Brian & Alison caught 9, Mark Hunt caught 10 with Jason Pusey taking a morning off from his Eyebrook duties to catch 8 trout at Thornton. Sunday and yet another wet day Keith Cowen was top rod hooking 10 trout and landing 6 for his mornings session.

If your coming to fish the bank we recommend you bring waders.

Water clarity is still good with a good.

Current rod average: 2.5

As always we recommend you call the lodge for latest information 01530 230807 if your coming to fish the bank you will require waders

Thornton Weekly Report week ending 6th October 2019

Thornton Weekly Report

Week ending 6th October 2019

Tel 01530 230807

It certainly rained at the beginning of last week, enough rain to raise the water level by 6ft during a 48hr period.

We are lucky that the fields along our two feeder streams have not yet been ploughed, resulting in less dirty water running off the land and into the reservoir. Our water clarity therefore remained good enough for anglers to catch fish all last week.

With the rising water levels covering the previously exposed banks and vegetation the trout have moved onto these newly flooded areas and are currently running along the shallows opposite the lodge, wood bank and around the corner down towards lonesome pine

Tuesday during the heavy rain S Wright banked fished and caught 5 on a floating fry, with J Fry and T McInally fishing the last 4 hour from the bank off the corner of the wood catching 8 on white muddler, Silver butcher.

By Wednesday we were 6ft up with water clarity a good 2ft+ K Saxton caught 9, K Prowting caught 11 with D Pritchard catching 6 all in front of the wood fishing over the flooded vegetation with montana, viva and small snakes.

Friday C Sayer and M Cross shared a boat catching 18 for their mornings visit, Dave Slessor caught 12, C Holt caught 11, J Scott caught 21, S Meachem 6 with P Wurm catching 8 during a short 3 hour late evening session. A variety of patterns worked, buzzer, hares ear, lures, damsel with a floating, Intermediate or DI3 line best.

The weekend continued to fish well with the water clarity continuing to improve with a good 4ft of clarity. Again the shallows opposite the lodge, wood bank, lonesome pine fished best although a few fish were caught from the stones and green bay

Jan Webber caught 11, M Clay caught 9, Mark Hunt 17, S Thompson 7, Szymon caught 10 with Russ Martin catching 5

Current rod average: 3.4

As always we recommend you call the lodge for latest information 01530 230807 if your coming to fish the bank you will require waders

Thornton Weekly report 28th September

Thornton Weekly Report

Week ending 29th September 2019

Tel 01530 230807

Much Improved. Thornton has started to fish again with a high number of fish which have been in for months showing, these are fish of 2lb+ with the rainbow great tails, super fit looking fish with photos on our Facebook page www.facebook.com/FlyFishStore

We are seeing good numbers of fish feeding on the surface with buzzers & sedges on the water, the main area were seeing the fish move is in front of the valve tower, green bay & down along the stones.

Floating, midge tip or intermediate lines best with small diawls size 14, hoppers, cdc, daddies & blue flash damsel patterns

The heavy rain has increased the water level by at least 2ft, however clarity remains good due to there being plenty of stubbles in the fields and no plough. The increase in the level has started to flood the bank vegetation that grew during the summer, I would expect the wood bank to start drawing fish which should start to produce some sport for our bank anglers, we recommend if your coming to fish the bank you bring wellingtons or waders.

Clarity is good, very little algae on the water, water temp 17c

Current rod average: 2.8

As always we recommend you call the lodge for latest information 01530 230807
