That’s the 2018 season drawn to a close.

During our last week of the season fry patterns caught the majority of the catch especially mini snakes although a few rods who persevered with buzzers enjoyed some success

Tuesday John Simpson fished his bunny patterns to catch 6 trout, Wednesday Carl Bond fished with black buzzers to take his 4 fish with J Scott catching 10 on snakes fished on a DI3. Thursday Tut Miles fished with buzzers to catch his 4 trout. Friday and the two top rods A Johnstone with 6 trout & Simon Kolkowski with 5 trout both fished buzzer patterns with D Button arriving to fish the last 4 hour session picking up 3 quick fish on an intermediate and minkie pattern in front of the lodge.

Saturday Richard Dayman and John Kirk caught 8 on snakes, Alison Toon & Brian Sibley caught 5 with Mark Hunt working hard for his 7 trout. Andy Lilly returned a 3lb+ Brown trout

Sunday and the last day of the season Mark Hunt worked hard for his 3 fish returning another nice brown trout.

Our rod average for the last week of the season was 1.5

Since the 1^st October we have enjoyed one of our best autumnal sport for a number of years with the fishery rod average over these past 6 weeks 2.9

As we enter our last week of the season, closing date 18^th November, the weather forecast looks favourable.

The corner of the wood and down past the lonesome pine continues to produce fish during the morning, with green bay and the main car park fishing best from mid morning onwards.

Arthur Olding caught 6 for his mornings visit from the car park and green bay, Martin Vernon caught 4 for his mornings visit from the shallows in front of the wood.

Although the majority of fish are being caught on booby, cats whisker, snakes, blobs and fry patterns some anglers continue to get some success on buzzers and crunchers.

Mark Hunt caught his fish from various areas around the reservoir, catching in the late afternoon drifting down the Thornton arm using his sparsely tied crunchers.

The water is currently gin clear

The water level is down 7ft as STW have engineering works to be done to the overflow and spillway. STW have started the work.

Rod average of 2.5

Another steady week at Thornton with a 2.5 rod average. The main areas producing are the corner of the wood, green bay and car park with floating, intermediate or slow sinker best. A mixture of patterns are taking fish from buzzers, crunchers to blob, booby and fry patterns.

Jan Webber spooned the fish he caught on Friday and they had being feeding on large buzzers and bloodworm.

Andy Lilley caught 5 trout on a floating fry and an intermediate. John Simpson used his bunny patterns to boat 12 trout taking fish from all over the reservoir. Richard Price fished hoppers and boobies to catch his 6 trout with Tut Miles sticking to his buzzers and crunchers to catch 5 during his mornings visit with Peter Wrigley and Mark Hunt also catching on buzzers, diawls and crunchers.

The fish taking buzzer and nymph patterns are in the shallowest of water in front of the wood and down past the lonesome pine

Mick Adkin caught a 3lb rainbow, Brent Hart 4lb8oz brown from his float tube with Howard Davies catching a huge 3lb1oz perch which took his green pea

Week ending 28^th October

Rod average of 2.8

Thornton is enjoying one of its best October fishing for a long time with last week’s rod average 2.8

Bob Menhams fished a Monday morning session using a soldier palmer to catch 5 trout. Tuesday and the wind blew from the west Arthur Olding fished the sheltered water in front of the main car park catching 5 on an intermediate using a blob and booby combination. Wednesday calmer conditions greeted the anglers P Hunt caught 8 while John Simpson fished his bunny patterns to record 14 trout caught from the corner of the wood, green bay and main car park

P Hunt returned on Thursday catching 13 trout (21 in two days), Mick Huffer caught 5 from in front of the wood.

Friday and the temperature was dropping Keith Coley and John Bebington found the fish catching 17 for their afternoon visit.

Saturday and an icy start greeted the anglers, we had to delay the boats going out as the pontoon was icy. By 9.15am the boats were out and despite the cold wind the anglers caught well, P Martindale caught 5, Jan Webber caught 6, Alison Toon & Brian caught 3 each with Mark Hunt using a minkie pattern he ties himself to record 13 trout

Sunday and another cold day, well it is late October and to be expected, didn’t stop Steve Swinfield & Steve Zeleny from boating 9 fish

With 3 weeks left of the Thornton season, closing date 18^th November it’s definitely worth a visit with todays (Monday 29^th) rod average 3.5

Rod average of 3.4

Thornton is enjoying an excellent months fishing, and for me it’s a relief to see a large part of the catch are the resident stock, some looking a bit thin, but at least they survived the heatwave.

Fish continue to run the shallows opposite the lodge past the corner of the wood and down the Markfield arm past the Lonesome pine, they are in water less than a foot deep and are easily accessible for boat and bank anglers.

With the level down 7ft, its exposed large areas of mud, bank anglers at the very will require wellingtons if not waders.

The shallows are fishing best during the morning, with clear water and bright weather they are moving further out during the afternoon. When this occurs some anglers have gone and tried the green bay area and have caught well using intermediate lines

Floating and intermediate lines best with daddies, cruncher, diawl bach, cormorants, blobs, booby and fry patterns, a right mix!

Jan Webber on Saturday caught a 6lb rainbow with Garry Biggam catching a 7lb8oz rainbow on Sunday

Peter Cox fished daddies and caught 10 trout, J Bradley & J Carrier shared a boat and caught 20+, D Poppitt caught 14 off the shallows, dam & green bay on buzzer, blob and fry patterns. Brian Sibley & Alison Toon caught 11 for their visit with Mark Hunt working the shallows and caught 22. Colwick Fly Fishers fished a competition with all 12 members catching and returning a rod average 3.9

With our records indicating over 4000 trout in the reservoir & with an autumnal feel to the mornings we would expect our good sport to continue with our closing date on November 18th

Week ending 14^th October

Rod average of 2.6

With two full days lost to the storm last week and with Sunday very wet & breezy we didn’t have that many rods for the week.

The rods who did venture out are still finding fish in the very shallow water off the corner of the wood with blobs, hare ears, small cormorants, black buzzers and fry patterns all taking fish

Monday Clive Holt and Colin Chambers fished the afternoon session boating 12 trout, Tuesday Peter Wrigley and boat partner Roger Dunster caught 9.

Wednesday was a slower day with D Rowbotham top rod with 5 fish although Dennis Barnes caught fish to 3lb8oz.

Thursday, Friday and Saturday were effected by the storm with Sunday proving to be a very wet day, this didn’t stop J Webber from catching 6 on hare ear and orange blob.

With our records indicating over 4000 trout in the reservoir & with an autumnal feel to the mornings we would expect our good sport to continue with our closing date on November 18th

Rod average of 5.5

At long last the fishing at Thornton has picked up with an excellent rod average 5.5 for the week

The best area has been the shallows in front of the corner of the wood down towards the lonesome pine with trout in very shallow water.

Floating, Hover and midge tip lines have worked best with orange blobs, cats whisker or nymphs and buzzers fished static

Wednesday Mick Glover fished a static claret nymph and was well into double figure catch as was D Slesser

Thursday and the same area fished again with Pete Hunt, Steve Meachem and Peter Wrigley all recorded double figure catches.

Friday Tut & Betty Miles used diawl bach & buzzers to record 11 trout for their mornings visit while John Bebbington & Keith Coley fished an afternoon session and recorded 20+ trout on diawl bach and hares ear

On Sunday Thornton Fly Fishers fished their single fly competition with every competitor having to use the same chosen fly, Cats Whisker, every competitor caught their 4 fish limit with the winner being Richard Dayman who had a heavier weight

With the water level down and the fish close on the margins the bank is worth a fish, you will require waders and there is obviously with the level down some muddy areas. Bill Nichols caught 3 fish losing many more for his bank fishing visit this week

Week ending 30^th September

Rod average of 1.2

A mixed weeks fishing with some rods catching well while other struggled with any evening rise more of a miss than a hit. With the reservoir down 7ft any amount of wind does churn up the fine silt & therefore the water on some days can have a brown tinge to it.

Saturday proved to be the best day with Brian Sibley boating 9 while Mark Hunt caught 7. The Markfield arm is the best area to try with an intermediate line with an orange blob, fab or booby being the most successful method. We are seeing a few of the larger claret buzzers hatching with claret hopper or cdc working during these hatches

A further stocking is due into Thornton on Tuesday 3^rd October

Rod average of 2.1

At last an improvement to the fishing at Thornton, with the fishing improving Friday onwards with the morning fishing best.

Friday morning C Sayer & M Cross caught 8 fishing buzzers and booby drifting from the main basin down into Markfield arm.

Saturday and again the morning session fished best, Jan Webber caught 10 on buzzer, Carl Bond 5 on buzzer with D Slessor catching 5. Stuart Thompson fished a short session from 1pm – 4pm and caught 4

On Sunday the morning fished best although the strengthening wind didn’t help, but again diawl bach and buzzers worked best

We are seeing some of the larger claret buzzers hatching and a few daddies, there are huge shoals of perch and roach fry all over the reservoir.

Water clarity is good

With improving conditions, air & water temperatures we were able to stock Thornton today with River Gwash fish farm trout, photos on our facebook page

Our record indicate over 4,000 trout in the reservoir, we would hope this introduction of fresh stock along with cooler conditions will see an improvement to the sport.

Not many rods fished last week as we continued to advice rods to visit one of our other larger venues Foremark, Eyebrook & Draycote
