Our water temperature at 7.30am for most of the week was just under 19c degrees allowing us to introduce some fresh stock fish last Tuesday with another stocking due this week.

We still have algae on the water although any breeze is helping to clear it. Despite the stocking it has still been a relatively tough weeks fishing with the rod average at 1.0

Mornings are still fishing best although we are having some fish move in the evening, unfortunetly any evening rise is occurring during the last 15 minutes of daylight!

Most of the fish taken are coming to floating lines with claret emergers, dries or daddies with an intermediate and micro booby, cats whisker and booby.

Steve Windram caught 5 on a cats whisker in front of the main dam, Nev Welsh caught 3 for his mornings session from the same area. Andre Russell too to his float tube catching 3 but reporting plenty of nips and pulls before the hailstones and torrential cold rain forced him off the water. Mark Hunt reported a frustrating days fishing working hard on a variety of methods to eventually boating his 5 fish again enduring the hailstones and torrential downpours.

We will hopefully see our water temperature drop further this week with the cooler weekly forecast they have given for the midlands.

Our water temperature is always taken 18inch below the surface between 7.30am & 8.00am every morning.

Water clarity: We have an algae bloom, visibility is around 4ft

At last our surface temperature has dropped to 19c with the odd cooler morning opening at 18.5c with a the current forecast for the coming week we should see our surface temperature remain around the 18.5c -19c

On the overcast cooler mornings we have seen fish feeding on the surface with the first of our large claret buzzers starting to show, ironically a good week earlier than expected. You can watch a claret buzzer hatch out on our facebook page www.facebook.com/FlyFishStore

Saturday was the day when it all clicked, better water visibility, water temp 18.5c with Sreve Frakes in his float tube catching 11 trout on diawls and blobs, Andre Russell & Richard Dunnett also took to their tubes registering 6 between them. Mark Hunt commented he was sure his success was down to fishing on the drift taking 12 fish on a small cats whisker, diwals and blobs. Howard Davies fished in front of the lodge taking 3 on dries and emergers.

The cooler morning session is still best, look for a cloudy morning. If the water temperature keeps around the 18.5c we will hopefully see a few fish starting to move in the evenings.

The toughest week of the season for the fishing at Thornton, July & high summer temperatures does us no favours. This past week we have recorded surface temperatures of 21.5c at 7.30am & seen them climb to 23c by 5.00pm, not surprising therefore we have an algae bloom. Very little to report as we advised our customers not to fish & have recommended Draycote & Foremark with their cooler aerators as an alternative.

Going forward to this coming week & at long last the weather forecast looks like it’s going in favour of the trout fisherman. Cooler overnight & lower daytime temperature on Sunday & this morning has reduced the water to 19c it’s unlikely to climb much above 19.5c during the day before dropping back to 19c by morning. If the current forecast is correct we could see it closer to the magic 18c by the middle of the week, fingers crossed!

With the water temperature down to 19c we should see our catches improve, especially if the water clarity improves as the algae dies back

Surprisingly anglers who caught fish reported they were higher in the water column than expected with intermediate lines working best with a damsel, cruncher, buzzer & booby patterns.

Its July height of the summer & the water temperatures are part of the fly fishing calendar, some years worse than others. On a plus side for fisheries, the daylight hours are slowly starting to creep back, nights will slowly lengthen, it’s during these darker & hopefully cooler night time temperatures that we will see our daytime water temps improve in favour of the fly fisherman.

Weather turns hot again, pushing our surface water temp to 23 degrees by the weekend, not great for fishing, not surprising therefore we have had our first proper algae bloom of the year.

Fishing best described as difficult, we have been advising our customer to fish the morning session or go to Foremark or Draycote who benefit from the aerator. With surface temperatures above 20 degrees you won’t get any sort of evening rise at Thornton

We take the water temperature twice a day, 7.30am & again at 5.00pm it can in bright still conditions put on 2 degrees during a sunny bright day in July with its long daylight hours. Our thermometer records the temperature 18in below the surface, its located off the corner of the pontoon over 11ft water.

With customers following our advice few anglers ventured out this week.

Mick Adkin fished a short morning session with a sinking line and a green and black marabou lure to catch his 3 fish, Jan Webber found one of the elusive blues in the deep channel in front of the lodge, Carl Bond fished the deep channel down the Markfield arm and caught his first Thornton brown.

Much, very much improved forecast for the coming week with cooler night, bit more breeze & daytime temperature lower, it should bring down water temperatures across the midlands & improve the fishing.

The cooler forecasted weather did come and certainly helped with surface water temperature starting most days at 17.5 degrees

Most anglers concentrated their fishing over the deeper water located in front of the dam, orange buoy and green bay.

As the cooler conditions continued we surprisingly found a large number of trout had moved into the shallower water at the top of the Thornton arm, Alan Bradford caught two missing other during a short 2 hour session with the trout coming to big red and small G&H sedge. Russ Martin won the Thornton Fly Fishers competition from this area boating 5 trout. Mark Hunt took our advice and went up the arm fishing his sparsely tied cruncher and damsel patterns to boat 11 trout.

John Considine fished the green bay area and enjoyed a red letter day catching 15 on a popper hopper and green diawl bach. Clive Holt caught 7 for his late evening visit with Peter Wurm and his son boating 5 for their last 4 hour session.

This morning we opened to a surface temperature of 18 degrees, looking at the forecast the morning session 8.30am – 3.00pm will fish best.

A tough week at Thornton with the heat of the day by Wednesday pushing our surface water temperature to 21+ degrees although a change in the weather, thankfully cooler nights helping by the weekend to bring the water temp back down to 19.5 degrees.

Not surprising therefore that the cooler mornings fished best, with no evening rise to speak of due to the water temperature.

The deeper water in front of the Dam, Green Bay & orange buoy fished best with anglers locating fish from 10ft to 30ft down fishing a range of sinking lines or 20ft+ leaders off a floater.

Kev Maile caught a blue of 5lb6oz along with brown 3lb8oz taken on a 16 olive buzzer fished deep with K Cowen taking 7 on Saturday morning again fished deep.

Orange Boobies, olive boobies along with damsels and small buzzer patterns fished deep produced best

Forecast for this coming week is cooler, showery conditions, great for the fishing, not so good if your planning a BBQ

With the longest day upon us summer has arrived with our water surface temperatures creeping upwards all week.

Monday and Tuesday we were still seeing an evening rise, Clive Holt caught 6 for his evenings visit, Russ Martin caught 3 with Peter Broad fishing a sedge pattern to boat his 4.

Tuesday morning Matt Cairns fished a cdc pattern to catch 4 including a 4lb blue, photo on www.facebook.com/FlyFishStore page, Russ Martin and Bob Obrien returned to fish the evening rise boating 8 trout between them.

By Wednesday the water temperature was starting to rise with difficult fishing conditions on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday with the cooler morning session best. Alex Christodolou caught 4 for his mornings visit, Richard Gibbon went deep to catch his 4 with Mike Cuppit using a medium sinking line with buzzer, diawl bach and a booby to catch his 7 trout

With the warmer conditions over the weekend anglers sensibly opted for a range of sinking lines and fished the cooler morning session. Martin Cay caught 6 for his morning session, Andre Russel, S Frakes and R Dunnett fished from their float tubes catching 14 between, Kev Mailie and P Harris went deep catching 10 trout to 5lb4oz with Mick Huffer catching 6 for his short 3 hour morning session.

On Sunday all anglers followed our advice and fished the morning session again using a variety of sinking lines, Matt Vickers was top rod with 6 while Dave Skudder fished the first 3 hours catching 4

Fish finders indicate the majority of the trout are between 10ft to 20ft with the largest concentration to be found over the deeper water in front of the dam.

Sinking lines with a booby, orange fished best, followed by olive, damsel patterns, small minkies. Some success was had with buzzers fished deep off 20ft leaders.

As it forecast hot for the next few days we recommend anglers fish the cooler morning session and contact the lodge for latest updates and advice

Water temperatures have remained good all week at 15 – 16 degrees.

With the cooler water temperatures the trout have moved back up through the water column with the majority of the trout taken this week in the top 3ft.

Anglers report seeing good numbers of trout feeding, but catching these trout has not been as easy as one would expect.

Nature’s bounty is upon the reservoir angler with trout feeding on Pin Fry, Buzzer of all sizes, Sedges, Daphnia, Shrimp, Damsel to name a few.

What is noticeable currently is small 14 – 16 sparsely tied flies are working best.

Russ Martin fished the evening rise catching 8 trout, Norman Perkins fished green bay area with buzzer and diawl bach catching 17 trout, Andy and Christine Warren fished a morning session boating 6 trout wit R Mansell fishing his own tied damsel pattern to boat 10 fish. On Saturday when anglers reported seeing plenty of trout moving Mark Hunt showed the importance of tying your own flies using his small sparsely tied cruncher to catch well into double figures. Kev Mailie & Pete Harris again showed the importance of small flies using size 16 nymphs and dries to boat 10 fish.

Water clarity is good.

Another week of continued high water temperatures with the surface temperature between 19 – 20 degrees

Long leaders 20ft+ was the way forward with a heavy if sacrificial buzzer on the point with size 14 buzzer on the droppers working best. A fast sinking line with a booby has also worked with anglers concentrating their efforts to the morning session & the deeper water.

Monday A. Lilley took 9 on buzzer during morning session, Andy and Chris Warren took 6 on Wednesday, Mick Jay took a 4lb rainbow Saturday with Mick Hanson taking 4 all over 3lb on bobbies on Wednesday morning, Saturday Andre Russell took his float tube out and caught  8 with Phil Mee taking 5 on Sunday morning.

Anglers have enjoyed the blues that were stocked with several blues caught to 3.5 lb

This morning Monday 5^th June with this cooler, stormy weather our water temperature has already started to drop, today it’s at a fish friendly 18degrees, looking at the forecast for the next few days I expect the temperature to drop closer to where it should be for early June somewhere between 16 – 17 degrees
