Weekly Report Week ending 4th October 2015

As we move into October fry patterns are taking more and more fish, however don’t pack those emergers and dry flies away yet, as this mild October continues to give us good buzzer hatches.

Russ Martin won the Thornton Fly Fishers pensioners match using a size 14 Elk Hair Sedge to take a 4 fish limit for a total weight of 11lb including a 4lb12oz rainbow. Adrian Freer also used a size 14 Elk Hair Sedge to take his 6 fish while Simon Crane fished a small G&H sedge to catch his 5 trout, Mark Hunt fished a combination of daddies and cruncher to catch his trout including a rainbow of 4lb8oz and a 2lb brown while Mat Cairns fished a buzzer

Fry Patterns are also working, the Snake, Bunny Leach, small cut throat cats & cats whiskers with anglers this past week only having to use two lines, a floater or intermediate.

Main dam, Green Bay & Stones continue to be the most productive part of the reservoir with a good number of fish to be seen feeding along these areas, we will expect if not this coming week but next to start seeing fish moving into the arms and the large shoals of fry around the weed beds & boat pontoon.

Weekly Report Week ending 27th September 2015

Again this week a lot of fish to be seeing feeding but at times preoccupied on feeding on one specific fly, size & colour. Shipmans buzzer black in a size 14 worked well as did size 14 & 16 dries, however when we had a bit of a breeze daddies also worked but not fished static.

Fry patterns on an intermediate also worked with the bunny leach & snake patterns best.

Stones up to green bay & along the dam wall produced best but we are starting to see fry feeding in front of the lodge and up into the arms.

With the surface water temp down to 14 degrees it will encourage more fish to start on the large shoals of coarse fish fry we have this year.

Peter Wrigley caught 3lb8oz rainbow,  Nev Welsh 3lb10oz, Trevor Pegg caught 9 to 3lb2oz, Adrian Free 3lb6oz rainbow, Matt Cairns fished a diawl bach to take his 3lb with Richard Dayman and Norman Perkins sharing a boat and catching 10 fish each on a washing line to 5lb, Bill Holland fished the last four hours fishing a size 14 klinkhammer to take 3 fish to 4lb12oz,Terry Green caught 2 fish 4lb12oz and 3lb8oz with David Price taking a rainbow of 3lb12oz, Mark Hunt caught 4lb while Brian Sibley recorded a 5lb rainbow with J Quinn 4lb rainbow and Dave Skudder 4lb4oz rainbow.

September & October can be very good months for us lets hope the weather is right and we get to enjoy an Indian summer

Weekly Report Week ending 13th September 2015

With the cooler temperatures water clarity improved as the week went on with anglers reporting plenty of trout feeding on the surface although at times proved difficult to tempt, with fish either drowning the fly or coming short, they seemed preoccupied on the smaller buzzer hatching, with anglers stepping down to size 14 emergers, hoppers and smaller daddy patterns catching.

Towards the weekend a few fish were turning onto the fry with anglers using an intermediate with hares ear, snakes, cats whisker and bunny leaches.

Green bay & stones has produced best with large numbers of trout in these areas, although some fry bashing has been seen along the main dam.

Louis Conway recorded 3lb8oz rainbow with D Barnes fishing a sedge pattern for his 3lb rainbow, Doug Timms recorded 2 trout for total bag weight 7lb14oz, M Norman fished a snake to take his 4lb4oz with Trevor Pegg recording fish of 4lb12oz & 3lb10oz, Matt Cairns caught 3lb14oz rainbow with Peter Galloway taking the best fish of the week a 6lb rainbow. Weekly Report Week ending 6th September 2015

Algae persisted off and on all week but with a light breeze most of the week it ensured we had plenty of algae free water to fish. Water temperature by the weekend was a fishing friendly 16.5 degrees

West Mids Police enjoyed their annual visit to us this week with all catching on a variety of different methods from mini lures, damsels to dries.

Those fly patterns were a feature of the week a real mixture of flies working, the one thing in common everything needed to be fished in the top 18inches.

Early part of the week in front of the lodge down to the main basin was the best area with plenty of fish to be seeing moving, towards the latter part of the week the mouth of the Markfield arm and stones produced best.

Bob Obrien caught a 4lb rainbow, Richard Collier caught 3lb12oz rainbow on a daddy, Ray Jordan caught his first ever brown trout a fish of 2lb4oz, Paul & Sam Cook recorded a trout of 4lb10oz, while Keith Gregory caught a rainbow of 6lb4oz and his partner Andrew Royston 4lb4oz, Bob Menhams fished a Cormorant pattern to take 2 fish including one of 5lb for his Saturday morning visit.

Weekly Report Week ending 30th August  2015

First half of the week fished best with an algae bloom from mid week onwards seemingly slowing the fishing, despite anglers coming in and reporting good numbers of trout feeding especially along the length of the Markfield arm, off the stones and main basin. We continue to see especially during any late evening  buzzer hatch fish moving in front of the pontoon.

Emergers, hoppers, daddies, buzzer, damsel & muddlers all worked well with dries especially good during the last hour when our evening rise was at its best.

Geoff Willis recorded a trout of 3lb8oz with N. James again recording fish over 4lb, this time 4lb14oz, Mark Hunt recorded fish of 4lb & 5lb4oz with Peter Wrigley and Mick Hanson sharing a boat and bringing fish if 3lb and 4lb14oz to the scales while John Thomson caught a brown of 3lb8oz

Today’s (Monday) rain and much cooler temperature has helped clear the algae with our current water temperature just under 18 degrees which is good for seeing fish feeding on the surface.

89 rods caught 125 trout for a 1.4 rod average

Weekly Report Week ending 23rd  August  2015

The evening has being the most productive period to fish with anglers staying on to fish the last couple of hours enjoying most evening great evening rise sport to ever increasing hatches of claret buzzer.

Water surface temperature has remained around the 18 degree mark this past week, with the shortening of the daylight hours the water temperature will slowly continue to drop which in turn will ensure the trout come onto the feed and remain in the upper water column.

During the day the lonesome pine, stones & orange buoy area has produced best with boats on the drift generally producing better than the anchored boats. Muddlers, dries, suspender buzzers, cats whisker & the washing line has produced best with emergers, daddies & dries best in the evening

Baz Ford caught a 3lb rainbow as did Sosh Richmond, Nev Welsh recorded a 5lb10oz rainbow, B Philips caught fish of 4lb4oz, 5lb7oz, Dave Simmonds fished a green buzzer to record a 4lb4oz rainbow with Steve Windram fishing a claret emerger to take his 5lb4oz rainbow, M Kelly and D Bridgeman shared a boat catching 8 fish for total bag weight of 20lb using small black buzzers fished on the drift, Mat Cairns also fished a claret emerger to record his 4lb rainbow

108 rods caught 201 trout for a 1.9 rod average

Weekly Report Week ending 16th August  2015

As is often the case watch the weather and speak to the lodge for latest updates ensured anglers fished the most productive sessions which this past week seemed to shift daily from morning session to the last 4 hours and the evening rise.

Water temperature as started to fall with the cooler evenings and this morning at 7.30am was 18.5 degrees which is OK for the fishing.

Our claret buzzer has started hatching a week or 10 days earlier than expected, picture of the buzzer is on our facebook page, Flyfishstore, not surprising therefore the claret hopper has worked well as has the daddy and G&H sedge.

On the warmer brighter periods anglers have had to use the intermediate with a damsel, haresear or cats whisker taking fish

Best area in front of the lodge, Markfield Arm, Stones & orange buoy

Notable fish, Trevor Pegg rainbow 5lb4oz, 4lb6oz, Chris Sayer 3lb, Stuart Thompson 5lb, 3lb8oz, Bob Obrien 5lb

Weekly Report Week ending 7th August  2015

.A week of two halves as far as the fishing was concerned. The early part of the week with water temperatures between 17 – 18 degrees gave us a few evenings when the evening rise was excellent with anglers reporting fish high in the water during the daytime as well, chasing through the wave & coming to dries & emerges.

Towards the latter part of the week the brighter warmer conditions with little or no wind soon pushed the water temperature to 19 – 20 degrees with anglers having to alter their tactics accordingly reaching for the intermediate & slow sinking lines with damsel, blobs & cats whiskers producing better than the dries.

Lonesome pine, mouth of the Markfield arm, stones & on occasion especially during the late evening in the cooler conditions in front of the lodge.

Leicester Handicapped Anglers visited us Sunday & although the conditions were not easy they enjoyed their day averaging 2.0 with most taken oh Daddies, dries and buzzer, good angling.

Roger Jones recorded rainbow 3lb8oz, Mick Jay 5lb, Clive Holt 5lb8oz with Mick Cross 3lb8oz

Thornton weekly fishing report week ending 2nd August

Thornton    01530 230807

Weekly Report Week ending 2nd August  2015

The rain & cooler air temperatures over the past couple of weeks may not be great for those on summer holidays but for the fishing it was a godsend with surface water temperatures at the beginning of last week at a fish friendly 17 degrees a drop of 4 degrees from the early July.

Surface temperature of 17 degrees ensures it floating line & intermediate time with the fish moving back up towards the surface, it also ensures we had a few good evening rises with fish moving freely through the surface & anglers targeting them on dries.

Good numbers of fry in the margins with a few trout starting to feed on them

Dave Saunt caught a 5lb rainbow with Neil James catching a 5lb13oz rainbow on a white nomad, D Slessor fished a damsel and recorded trout of 6lb and 4lb with Ivan Slack fishing with the float tubers recording a rainbow of 5lb4oz.

Mark Hunt back from his Alaska fishing holiday soon recovered from his jet lag to record 13 trout for his mornings fishing on hoppers and daddies

The British Float Tubing Association visited Thornton on Saturday with the eventual winner of their competition Andre Russell with 4 fish 11lb12oz followed by Tony Parker with 4 fish for 9lb7oz

Best method floating or intermediate lines with hoppers, daddies, g&h sedge, damsel, cats whisker with the lonesome pine, stones and main dam best areas to try.

Thornton Weekly Fishing Report w/e Sunday 26th July 2015

Posted by & filed under Reports.

Thornton Weekly Fishing Report w/e Sunday 26th July 2015

Another challenging week at Thornton, although the cooler weather has at
last helped the water temperature drop to a respectable 17 degrees.
Again the most notable feature of the week has been the quality of the
fish caught, with over 10% of them weighing in at 5lb plus.
The biggest catch of the week fell to regulars Norma and Bill, who during an
evening session, took 8 fish to the boat whilst anchored just off the dam.
Noteworthy fish caught included 2 over 6lb taken by Mr. Martindale and
Mr. Cross. Other notables  where  Mr.Hill, Mr. Ward and Mr Burr, who all caught
fish over 5lb.
Mr Brian Sibley also netted yet another fish over  5 lb on Saturday.
Best bag of the week fell to Mr. Dunnett, who took 3 fish for 13 lb
whilst float tubing.

Anglers who kept in touch with the lodge and fished the cooler days did best, with the majority of the trout caught coming from the deep water in front of the main car park, dam wall and stones. The best methods were either a fast sinking line with short leaders and a booby, snakes and blobs or floating lines long leaders 20ft+ with weighted bloodworm and buzzer.
Prospects for the coming week look good with the water temperature dropping to more respectable levels.

Tight Lines.

Andy.
