Thornton  Weekly Fishing Report w/e Sunday 19th July 2015

Similar to last week, the warm weather has resulted in challenging
conditions but the quality of the fish taken has been exceptional with
25% of the week’s catch exceeding 3lb, including some resident fish of
5lb +.
Biggest catch was by member Mr White who boated 4 in a short morning
session before it became too warm.
On Wednesday Mick and Val Jay boated fish of 5lb and 41/2 lb during
their session on whilst Keith Cowan had a brace weighing in at 5 and 3
1/2 lb. On Saturday Brian Sibley fished damsels over the weed beds off
the dam to net 2 fish for 10lb.
Anglers who kept in touch with the lodge and fished the cooler days did best with the majority of the trout caught coming from the deep water in front of the main car park, dam wall and stones. Similar to last week the best method was either a fast sinking line with short leaders and booby, snakes and blobs or floating lines long leaders 20ft+ with weighted bloodworm and buzzer.
This week there has been some good hatches of damsels during the day and
sedges in the evening and in favourable conditions, dry fly tactics
have taken fish in the evening.

Weekly Report Week ending 28th June 2015

Summer has arrived, but we continue to see good numbers of trout moving in the morning & again in the evening although I expect this coming week it will alter with trout moving first thing before moving into the cooler deeper water.

This week good hatches of green midge, buzzer, caenis, sedges, daphnia with the damsel improving daily, large numbers of pin fry to be seen.

Alan Johnston returned a 6lb brown, N James recorded a rainbow 4lb14oz, Dave Pallot recorded 3lb4oz rainbow.

It will be all change for this coming week I expect sinking lines will be the order of the day or if you want to use a floater leaders of 20ft+ with bloodworm, buzzer, damsel, blobs & boobies sure to feature with the area in front of the dam, orange buoy, green bay the areas to concentrate. I suspect the morning session will also be the most productive time of the day to fish

Weekly Report Week ending 21st June 2015

Usually and under normal summer conditions we would be reporting “fast sinking lines & booby” but that’s not the case, far from it. Every morning at 7.30am this past week our surface water temperature was still a very fish friendly 18 degrees with huge hatch of small midge, sedges, caenis, damsel & this week good numbers of pinfry to be seen ensuring lots of trout to be seen moving on the surface feeding on this bonanza.

There is a downside, if you consider it a downside, with so much natural food it can at times be challenging, but that’s the beauty of our sport.

Mark Hunt is on a roll having now caught 39 trout in two visits, Len Hill found a red headed damsel in the boat put it on and caught 4 trout all averaging over 2lb for his mornings visit, Russ Martin fished a home tied dry to take 3 trout for his mornings visit while Chris Sayer opted for a morning boat to catch his 5 trout, David Price recorded a trout of 4lb1oz, Danny Lovegrove caught 5 on owls and green buzzer while Howard Davies caught 8 trout with 2 over 5lb

With no sign of the weather turning into a proper summer soon it will continue to be Floating Lines, Intermediates & slow sinkers this coming week with the small buzzer patterns to tempt the midge feeders, silver thorax phtail & small hares ears for the pinfry feeders, sparkle gnat & a tups for the caenis feeders & your favourite damsel patterns.

Thornton Weekly Fishing Report Week Ending 14 June 2015

Weekly Report Week ending 14th June 2015

As we near the longest day our water temperature is unusually cool for the time of year at around 16.5degrees we would normally expect it to be pushing 18 degrees or above. Not that were complaining the cooler water has kept any algae bloom at bay currently we are enjoying gin clear water conditions with the cooler 16 degree water temperature ideal, perfect for trout to be in the top of the water feeding heavily on massive hatches of small green midge, buzzer, caenis, sedge & in the past few days damsel.

Anglers report every day of seeing large numbers of trout sipping off the surface, although these may not always be easy to tempt their not uncatchable it just requires a slightly different approach.

Mark Hunt went for the tapered leader down to the lowest breaking strain he dared, trimmed his smallest suspender buzzer down and promptly caught 10 trout, Trevor Pegg used his small black cruncher and small damsel to catch 11 for his visit, Mike Cupitt fished a morning session with buzzers to record 6 trout.

Fish at times are moving all over the reservoir including the arms although the most productive area is in front of the Dam, Green Bay, Stones & mouth of the Markfield Arm.

Weekly Report Week ending 25th May 2015

Water clarity is excellent with large buzzer hatches and daphnia the trout can pick and choose their morsel and are therefore not as easy to catch, it makes for some interesting fishing.

Anglers are reporting and we can also see from the lodge large numbers of trout moving and feeding with some of the evening rises were having the best we have seen in a number of years.

Pete Cox fished on a damp and windy Monday to catch 7 on live buzzer, Richard Dayman fished orange blob and damsel to take 13 fish to 4lb while T peg fished a black diwal bach to catch 18 fish to 4lb, the blue flash damsel has worked well this past week helping Paul Martindale take 5 trout for his morning session as did David Burr recording 10 trout for his visit, Tony Lorrimer caught 11 for his visit including the best fish of the week a rainbow of 5lb+ returned.

Mark Hunt, his brother and a friend from California took our advice and came for the evening rise they weren’t disappointed all catching and missing a good number of fish on dries and emergers.

Weekly Report Week ending 17th May 2015

Another week when we experienced unseasonable strong winds, however on the days the weather forecast was kind for us we enjoyed excellent fishing with some great evening rise sport resulting in an overall rod average of 3.5 for the week.

Mark Hemmings fished the late evening session on Monday catching 9 on a blue damsel returning on Sunday morning to catch another 8 again on the blue damsel, Richard Dayman recorded fish up to 4lb for his morning session with Norman Perkins also taking fish up to 4lb4oz, Trevor Pegg fished the washing line to take his catch of 19 trout, with Mick Glover using shipmans buzzer to great effect, Mick Cross also recorded fish of 4lb+

A number of anglers reported great sport to fish chasing a muddler through the wave on the overcast days with a few anglers reporting some hawthorn on the water along the stones with a black hopper working well for them.

Best flies, dries, suspender buzzer, shipmans, damsel, muddler with the main basin, stones and corner of the wood

Thornton    01530 230807

Weekly Report Week ending 9th May 2015

Despite two very windy days on Tuesday & Wednesday Thornton continues to enjoy a good spring with a rod average of 4.5 for the past week

Summer cant be too far off with the arrival of the swifts & the cuckoo this week. With the surface water temperature at 13 degrees we are seeing good buzzer hatches, much better hatches than last year with trout spooned feeding heavily on the buzzer although some have snail and damsel nymph.

The last four hour permit this week 4.45pm – 8.45pm is giving the angler the opportunity to enjoy our evening rise which again is far better than it was last year.

Trevor Pegg fished the washing line with buzzer & diawl bach to take his catch of 14fish up to 3lb2oz, Keith Coley recorded trout of 5lb2oz, 3lb9oz, Mick Glover caught 14 trout on a size 14 olive buzzer, Dennis Barnes fished a damsel to take a 4lb rainbow, Jamie Scott fished olive buzzer & black cruncher to catch 10 trout for his evening visit, Mark Hunt continued his good run of form fishing suspender buzzers with Alex Rankine finding an Olive Hopper worked best for him. Jeff Harrison caught the largest trout of his fishing career a 5lb rainbow, with Phil Mee also taking a 5lb rainbow in his excellent catch with a Rio midge tip the line working best for him

Yet another week of changeable weather conditions, from wind to flat calm and fluctuating air temperature from a cool 9 degrees to a pleasant 17 degrees

We are seeing some sort of evening rise most evenings with the days when the air temperature remains up we are having an excellent rise with good buzzer hatches.

The main basin has produced best with Green Bay, Dam Wall, Stones & orange buoy areas to concentrate your fishing efforts on.

Mark Hunt enjoyed an excellent Saturday morning with bobs bits, daddy & yellow owl suspender to catch well into double figures, Keith Cowen caught his limit on Saturday morning using buzzers, Andrew Wilson fished the late evening taking 5 on a muddler including a brown of 3lb, Tony Bokenham also fished a muddler to take his limit again including a 3lb brown,  Neil James continues his good run of catches with another rainbow of 4lb6oz, Russ Martin has twice this week fished the evening rise taking fish on a small diawl bach.

Weekly Report Week ending 28th April 2015

Good weeks fishing at Thornton with the weekly rod average at 4 with the majority of the trout taken falling to buzzer, diawl bach, damsel with some fish taking dries.

Trout have moved into the main basin of the reservoir with plenty of trout to be seen moving around the red buoy area, stones, main dam & green bay with excellent buzzer hatches.

Bank anglers are still catching from the corner of the wood past lonesome pine down to the farm bank. If your coming to fish the bank we recommend you bring waders

Couple of evenings when the air temperature stayed up the evening rise was exceptional, Clive Holt fished suspender buzzer on the drift to boat 9 for his last four hour visit.
