Weekly Report ending 24th August

112 rods recorded 271 trout for the week for a rod average 2.4

Swallows & martins have worked the water all week it’s not surprising therefore that Daddy, cdc, shipman’s buzzer & hopper patterns have stood out this week with claret for the cdc and shipman’s patterns working best.

Excellent buzzer hatches have provided good evening rise this week with trout feeding all across the reservoir.

Tom Hutchinson caught 10 on a foam backed daddy, Mick Glover fished buzzers to take trout up to 4lb1oz, Clive Holt fished the last four hours and enjoyed the evening rise boating 14 trout, Scott Wilson used a hopper, daddy & buzzer patterns to get his catch of 14 trout, Paul Martindale fished the washing line to take his limit, father & son Mathew & Fergus Liggins fished the last four hours and evening rise using daddies and buzzers to boat 11 trout. Mark Hunt fished daddies & orange hoppers to catch his 7 trout with Alex Ranking picking up his catch of 7 trout from all over the reservoir. Mick Norman followed advice given at the lodge and fished a daddy and claret cdc to boat his 8 trout.

Looking at the weather forecast its looking good for the fishing this next week, and we fully expect our good surface sport and evening rise to continue.

Water temperature is around 16 degrees with water clarity good.

Thornton    01530 230807

Weekly Report ending 17th August

68 rods recorded 122 trout for the week for a rod average 1.8

A windy week kept rods off the water at times, but the bonus was the cooler weather the wind bought with it helping to reduce our surface water temperature to 18 degrees and towards the end of the week the fishing picked up with fish to be seen feeding off the surface with anglers over the weekend catching on daddies, hoppers & cdc patterns

Russ Martin fished a few hours opposite the lodge taking 4 fish on dries, Mick Glover caught 5 for his mornings visit on a washing line, Rodger Fell fished a daddy to take a 4lb8oz rainbow while Mark Hunt fished dries, cruncher, buzzer patterns to catch 16 for his weekend visit

With the cooler water temperature our buzzer hatches are returning with an evening rise giving good sport since the weekend.

Water clarity is good with boat anglers catching in the Thornton Arm, wood bank and as you would expect out in the main basin

Sport continues to be good this week with Mondays rod average 5.1 with the majority taken on dries & cdc with the cool forecast for the coming week our good sport should continue.

Thornton update 15 August 2014

Posted by & filed under Reports.

Thornton 01530 230807

At last the cooler conditions have arrived with our surface temperature these last two mornings at a fish friendly 18.5degrees resulting in a dramatic upturn in the fishing with yesterdays rod average at a much improved 3 fish per rod.

Russ Martin fished the morning session fishing along the weed beds of the Thornton arm to land 4 fish all on dries, other rods fished the Markfield arm and along the stones with trout now been taken from all these areas.

Fish these last two evenings have been seen feeding off the surface to hatches of buzzer & caenis.

Water clarity is good & with the continued cooler weather sport should continue to improve.

Call the lodge 01530 230807

Our other venues Draycote & Foremark are also seeing a marked improvement in catches.

Weekly Report ending 3rd August

60 rods recorded 39 trout for the week for a rod average 0.7

It has been a difficult weeks fishing at Thornton with the surface temperature topping 22c degrees, the good news as I write is the temperature at all FM(UK) venues is at long last on the way down .

Water clarity remains good with anglers out with fish finders reporting good numbers of fish at depths of 13ft although anglers have reported on some of the breezier days catching fish on dries especially along the stone bank.

Unsurprisingly the cooler mornings have been fishing best.

With a mixed forecast for this week, cooler, showery conditions it will help to drop the water temperature further & as the temperature drops we will see an upturn in the fishing.

As always during these types of fishing conditions we recommend you contact the lodge for latest reports before you travel.

Thornton    01530 230807

Weekly Report ending 13th July

66 rods recorded 101 trout for the week for a rod average 1.5

Cooler mornings are generally fishing best with the deeper water producing best. With the warmer weather most anglers are reaching for their sinking lines with booby, blob and damsel patterns however on the cooler overcast days a floating line with buzzers has also worked with John Gunby and R Dayman catching 11 trout for their mornings visit on buzzers and millar nymph.

With the heat we have some algae in the water but visibility remains reasonable.

Damsels are around in increasing numbers with hatches of sedge, caenis and a small green buzzer in the evening, to see what the trout were eating the night before have a look at spider webs on the lodge building they will be full of the night previous hatches.

Fry are in abundance with trout feeding on them in front of the main dam, stones & green bay

Thornton    01530 230807

Weekly Report ending 6th July

94 rods recorded 98 trout for the week for a rod average 1.0

A difficult weeks fishing at Thornton with the morning generally fishing best with the cooler deeper water in front of the main dam and orange buoys the area to be. Water does have a slight algae bloom

A Freer fished a yellow tadpole on an intermediate to take his 4 fish with Jim Foxall visiting the fishery for his first visit of the year catching his 4 fish limit on buzzers fished 10ft down taking fish to 3lb. Russ Martin picked one of the cooler evenings and caught 3 on dries with David Pritchard recording his 4 fish on a yellow tailed damsel. Gary Drew also visited Thornton for his first visit of the year following the advice from the lodge fished the morning session to take his 4 fish limit. Mark Hunt used his quill crunchers to take another 4 fish for his mornings visit with R Dayman also fishing a morning visit to record his catch of 5 trout.

Simon Giles who only took up fly fishing a few months ago and has started tying his own flies  took out a boat for the first time on Sunday morning catching 2 trout on his own tied damsel pattern, well done.

Thornton    01530 230807

Weekly Report ending 29th  June

88 rods recorded 106 trout for the week for a rod average 1.2

The cooler showery weather this past week has helped to clear the water.

Early part of last week a fast sinking line with booby or damsel patterns fished best however by the weekend the cooler showery weather did see some fish move up through the water column with some anglers reporting fish to dries, cruncher & diawl bach, however the morning session throughout the week fished far better than the late afternoon  / evening session

As with many reservoirs this year we have an abundance of pin fry trout feeding on these have proved difficult to tempt with a few trout falling to a small mini cats whisker, silver invicta

Roger Guise caught 7 for his mornings visit on olive buzzer and damsel, Trevor Pegg fished a morning session to catch 8 to 3lb+ on a damsel, Mark Hunt fished a morning session to take 7 trout on a Quill cruncher and diawl bach, Rob Knap fished a fast sinking line and boobies to take his 8 fish, again during a morning session.

Thornton    01530 230807

Weekly Report ending 22nd June

100 rods recorded 298 trout for the week for a rod average 2.9

Deep water around the orange buoys & in front of the dam is fishing best to anglers using fast sinking lines short leaders with boobies or damsel patterns or floating lines with 20ft+ leaders with damsel & buzzer patterns with all the flies set on the lower 8 – 10ft of the leader, with the cooler morning session fishing best.

Pin fry are about in large numbers a silver invicta, hares ear or silver thorax pheasant tail are three good patterns to fish when the trout are on these small coarse fish fry

During this bright spell an algae bloom is occurring during the day, which drops away during the cooler nighttimes.

Weekly fishing report 16th June 2014

Posted by & filed under Reports.

Thornton    01530 230807

 Weekly Report ending 16th June

86 rods recorded 266 trout for the week for a rod average 3.1

A better week for us with anglers finding the majority of the trout in the deeper water around the orange buoys & in front of the dam with anglers on the drift with a fast sinking line and boobies or snakes doing well.

Some anglers opted to fish from an anchored boat using their floating lines but with leaders in excess of 25ft with all the buzzer patterns on the lower 8ft – 10ft of the leader, this can be fished with or without an indicator

Damsels are increasing in numbers every week its not surprising therefore that damsel nymph patterns have also featured on last weeks returns.

The morning session seems to be producing best, although this coming weeks forecast of overcast conditions and slightly cooler temperature will certainly help the late evening fishing

Geoff Willis caught a 3lb rainbow, A Lawson 3lb, Nev Welsh 3lb, Chris Sayer 3lb, Tony Lorrimer 3lb8oz, Louis Conway 4lb8oz, Neil James 3lb8oz, 4lb9oz, Chris Carey 4lb9oz, Norma Prime 3lb9oz, Mark Hunt 4lb12oz, 4lb8oz

For trout feeding on caenis I find a single tups or sparkle gnat works well

Weekly fishing report week ending 8 June 2014

Posted by & filed under Reports.

Thornton    01530 230807

Weekly Report ending 8th June

100 rods recorded 190 trout for the week for a rod average 1.9

Damsel pattern seemed to work best this past week with a lighter shade of olive working best although buzzer patterns as you would expect continue to take fish. Anglers who had success using buzzers reported catching with buzzer patterns fished between 10ft – 20ft down

The green bay and deeper water around the orange buoys have produced best although season permit holder John Everitt fished an evening session with dry sedge patterns taking 4 trout from the very top of the Thornton arm

Plenty of sedges about in the evening as well as caenis, late evening buzzer hatches have been a bit of hit and miss affair this past week.

Plenty of pin fry to be found along the stones and dam wall, a silver invicta, pearly pheasant tail are two good patterns to use when targeting trout feeding on pin fry

For trout feeding on caenis I find a single tups or sparkle gnat works well
