Weekly Report ending 1st June     Thornton 01530 230807

123 rods recorded 257 trout for the week for a rod average 2.1

Buzzer, sedges, damsel, daddies, caenis, pin fry, snails, bloodworm have all been available for the trout to feed on this past week, nature`s larder store is well & truly open

We have seen some good evening rises this week if at times the trout proved a bit tricky with the caenis showing in increasing numbers, although referred to as the anglers curse a single dry Sparkle gnat or tups will often work

Although our boats will fish better than the bank as we move into July,  Simon Giles who only took up fly fishing this year bank fished opposite the lodge using a daddy to catch 3 trout on Sunday morning.

Russ Martin has banked fished this week he also caught opposite the lodge but reported getting broken by some bigger fish down by the farm bank.

The deeper water in front of the dam, orange buoys, stones & green bay has produced best although in the late evening boat anglers have reported fish moving at the top of both the arms.

On the days its overcast or with showers forecast trout can be seen feeding off the top most of the day as a group of Scottish anglers, Mr Freter party of 6 anglers, enjoyed those conditions during their visit catching 30 trout on buzzers, before visiting Draycote on their second day.

Conditions mid week were perfect, good amount of breeze, cloud cover with some sunny spells at times with good hatches of hawthorn and buzzer ensuring the trout moved for most of the day

Anglers caught on daddies, hawthorn, hoppers, buzzer, diawl bach & damsel patterns with the Markfield arm and green bay been the most productive areas. Boat anglers should start picking up fish on the drift with the area between the main dam & wood a favourite area to drift.

Bank anglers should concentrate their efforts from the corner of the wood down past the lonesome pine to the farm bank, this area you should see good numbers of hawthorn this week.

Keith Cowen caught a 3lb13oz rainbow, R. Townsend 3lb, N Perkins 3lb14oz, Alex Rankin 4lb, Tom Gamble 3lb8oz, Mark Hunt 5lb4oz, 4lb3oz

Weekly Report ending 5th May

138 rods recorded 517 trout for the week for a rod average 3.7

A better weeks fishing at Thornton with bank anglers enjoying good sport with the overcast conditions ensuring the trout remain close to the margins along the shallows.

Boat anglers are starting to find a few fish in green bay and down along the stones but the majority are still been caught all the way from the top of the Thornton arm along the shallows of the wood bank past the lonesome pine & down to the farm bank

In the main a floating line has worked best with buzzer, damsel & a few been taken on dries. When its bright a midge tip or intermediate line with blob, damsel & buzzers has worked. One bank angler took his limit on a stick fly a pattern not always used nowadays but still a pattern worth using.

Our evening rise is yet to get going properly, in the main due to a temperature drop most evenings, but a slight rise in the late evening temperature will kick start our evening rise sport

Four members of Staffordshire Police paid us a visit last week, M Cartlidge, J Goodwin, P Cleaver, T Strachan they had an excellent day all catching well into double figures.

Belgian anglers J Weissenberger & A Piccioli took advantage of the 3 day package we offer spending one day at Draycote, 2nd day at Foremark and their 3rd day at Thornton catching 16 trout on their Thornton visit

P Winnac caught 3lb rainbow, M Chapman 3lb, M Pepper 4lb10oz, M Scone 4lb10oz, F Liggins & M Liggins both caught trout at 4lb
